Assignments for Externship Seminar on
Tuesday, January 14, and Friday, January 17, 2014
Our first seminar meeting will be on Tuesday, January 14, at noon in room 118. Please read pages 1-9 in your text to prepare for that class. We will discuss the reading and review all of the requirements for the externship. If you are considering any change in your externship plans, please come by room 201 to see Ms. Luke or me on Monday, January 13.
As you know from registration, the Externship Seminar will have an intensive class on Friday, January 17. We will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. in room 115 and will finish by 1:30. This intensive class meeting is mandatory for all students taking Externship Seminar I. We will then meet only six additional times during the semester, so you will have a more flexible schedule that may assist you in completing your externship hours.
Below are the assignments for Externship Seminar classes on January 14 and 17. All assignments are in the book Learning from Practice (2d Edition, 2007) by Ogilvy et al. Written assignments are due at the beginning of class. Assignments may be submitted by email to firstname.lastname@example.org or in hard copy at the beginning of class. Please keep a copy that you may refer to during class discussions. Late assignments will not be accepted because the purpose of the written assignments is to help you prepare for class.
The seminar is one graded credit. Your grade will be based on your written work and your thoughtful, voluntary participation. Attendance at all of the seminar is required for participation in the externship program, unless you have previously taken the seminar. Discussion is a key component of this seminar. Accordingly, computers, ipads, phones and all other electronic devices must be turned off during class.
For Tuesday, January 14
I. Discussion of course requirements and goals for the semester.
A. Read text pages 1-9. Be prepared to discuss material. Glance ahead to Friday’s assignment to see if you have any questions about it. We will review the syllabus and course requirements.
For Friday, January 17, parts II through VI:
II. Discussion of Learning from Experience
A. Read text pages 11-25.
B. Complete in writing exercises 2.1 and 2.3. For exercise 2.3, follow the model on page 25. Bring two copies of your Learning Agenda to class, one to turn in and one to exchange with a classmate for discussion. Note that all required written exercises must be typed. Also type a list of questions you have about your externship, items that you might ask a supervisor or a student who externed there previously.
III. Discussion of Learning from Supervision
A. Read text pages 31-51.
B. Type answers for exercises 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 (draw on prior work or school assignments), 3.4, 3.5, and 3.7. These notes will assist you when we discuss the exercises in class and will be turned in.
IV. Discussion of Ethical Issues in Externships
A. Read text pages 53-78.
B. Find and read the ethical rules for the jurisdiction of your externship.
C. Be prepared to discuss all the exercises in the text. Submit in writing problems 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, and 4.4. (Note that Problems are different than Exercises in this text.) Also be prepared to discuss problems 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, and 5.5.
V. Discussion of Observation
A. Read text pages 215-236.
B. For exercise 12.1, prepare a detailed worksheet for opportunities for learning from observations (see samples on pages 220 and 221).
VI. Discussion of Ethical Issues in Externships (cont=d)
A. Read text pages 107-118.
B. Be prepared to discuss the problems in the reading assignment.
