Faculty, Alumni and other Stuff. As I have mentioned to many of you when we have been together, it is important that our faculty be recognized as scholars as well as exceptional teachers. That is why we encourage our faculty to participate in programs outside the law school Several of our faculty were featured at the recently completed meeting of the Southeastern Association of Law Schools which was held in Palm Beach, Florida. (I am sure that the location had nothing to do with the outstanding faculty participation). Professor Brannon Denning moderated a panel on faculty scholarship and Professor Marcia McCormick moderated a panel on teaching family law. I appeared on a panel discussing the federal rules of civil procedure, Professor Mike Floyd appeared on a panel about law school administration and Professor Wendy Greene appeared on a panel which discussed new developments in critical theory. Professor David Langum was part of a panel which discussed the writing of law school histories. Professor LaJuana Davis presented a criminal procedure paper as part of a New Scholars Workshop. Earlier in the summer, Professor Alyssa DiRusso traveled to Barcelona, Spain for the presentation of a paper on legal issues relating to small charities. While in the Palm Beach area, Vice-Dean Jim Lewis and I met with Ted Leopold '87, Rick Davis '83 and Judge Paul Moyle '76. Ted's personal injury practice continues to go well. Rick Davis has a successful real estate practice and continues to represent college football coaches like Sylvester Croom of Mississippi State and Judge Paul Moyle continues to be a very active member of the judiciary in the Palm Beach area as well as an active Harley rider. Dean Jim Lewis also visited Robert Shalboub '77 who has an extensive family law practice. He is very active in the community and has received the Florida Pro Bono award for his work. We also have some great alumni news from the state of North Carolina. Robert Rehm '93 has just been elected to partnership in the Smith Anderson firm in Raleigh. Robert has a practice which specializes in technology and intellectual property. One of my classmates from the class of 1974, Julian Mann, has been named to the North Carolina Bar Association Board of Governors. Doug Fox '73 has been named the incoming chairman of the Board of Directors for the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association. He is also the Chairman of the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission. Doug is featured on the cover of the Association's national magazine "State Ways" and there is a great profile inside. The summer has really flown by. Our new first year students arrive on Monday, August 11th and classes for eveyone else start on the 18th. While the students have been gone, we open our spaces to law groups doing advocacy training. The Alahama Defense Lawyer's Young Lawyers Section held their annual Bibb Allen Trial Academy at the law school last week. This week and continuing unti August 14th, we are hosting the Southern Public Defenders Training Center Annual Training for new public defenders. There are 29 public defenders from 5 southern states. I am off in the morning to attend the board meeting of the American Judicature Society. Next week, we welcome the members of the Cumberland Class of 2011. |
