Mobile Donor Dinner

As a way of saying thanks to significant law school donors, the law school hosts "donor dinners" in various places. Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the donor dinner at The Pillars in Mobile. The dinner was attended by Bill Wasden '81 and Forrest Latta '83, Pete Mackey '83, Marion Quina '74, Judge Virgil Pittman and their spouses. These events are always great fun and provides me an easy way to learn the wonderful things our alumni are doing.

We were especially honored to have Judge Virgil Pittman and his wife Lilly join us. He is a real hero to us all. He has been an FBI agent, a state circuit judge and a federal district judge. He issued some incredibly courageous rulings at a time when those rulings were not very popular. Time has now recognized both the courage and wisdom of those rulings. Judge Pittman is not a Cumberland graduate but a real friend to all of us. He has endowed a scholarship at the law school.

The highlight of the evening was a dialogue between Judge Pittman and all of us which followed dinner. He talked about some of his cases and the lawyers and judges he encountered in his remarkable career. It was living history at its best.

Next week, we will be hosting an alumni event at the Lawyers Club in Atlanta. If you are in the Atlanta area, I hope you can join us. If you need details, simply email Mary T. MIller, our alumni relations director at mtmiller@samford.edu.

Have a great rest of the week.
