The Extra 2%: How Wall Street Strategies Took A Major League Baseball Team from Worst to First

The major league team is the Tampa Bay Rays (formerly “Devil Rays”). As the subtitle indicates, the book (a) is about how the team went from worst to first (b) under new management consisting Wall Street types who applied to baseball some of approaches from the business world. Their challenge was a daunting one since Tampa Bay plays in the same division as the two franchises with the deepest resources, the Red Sox and the Yankees. The Rays remain competitive—as of the final week of the 2011 Regular Session the team is in the race for the AL Wild Card berth. In a sense, this book extends the theme of Money Ball (now a movie starring Brad Pitt), the featured book of the book club I led last year.
