Professor Miller joined the Cumberland faculty in 2007. She teaches analytical and persuasive writing to first-year law students in Cumberland’s Lawyering and Legal Reasoning program.
Additionally, Professor Miller is the founder and president of We Brief, LLC—an organization dedicated to providing high-quality brief writing and litigation support services to law firms and sole practitioners at the trial and appellate levels. Over the summer, Professor Miller worked across the state of Alabama on an alternative dispute resolution claims process, analyzing hundreds of claims on behalf of a third party administrator. Last summer, she worked for a local law firm writing summary judgment briefs involving geotechnical engineering lawsuits where liability exceeded several hundred million dollars.
Prior to joining the Cumberland faculty, Professor Miller was a defense litigation attorney at Maynard, Cooper & Gale, P.C. She was a member of the firm’s Labor and Employment practice group, and represented both national and local clients when charged with claims of discrimination, sexual harassment, and violations of wage and hour laws.
Recently, the Alabama State Bar President appointed Professor Miller to the Editorial Board for The Alabama Lawyer, the bar journal received every other month by over 17,000 attorneys licensed to practice law in Alabama. She is also a frequent speaker at continuing legal education seminars regarding the improvement of written advocacy skills.
Professor Miller is a member of the American Bar Association, the Alabama State Bar, and the Birmingham Bar Association. She is a member of the Young Lawyers’ and Womens’ Sections of the Alabama State Bar and Birmingham Bar. Professor Miller is a member of the national Legal Writing Institute for legal writing professors. Professor Miller also serves at the faculty advisor for the Cumberland chapter of the Defense Research Institute.
Professor Miller is an honors graduate from both Cumberland School of Law (J.D., cum laude, 2003), and Samford University (B.A., cum laude, 2000). Professor Miller received several awards and scholarships during law school and college for outstanding research and writing.
In her time outside and classroom and business, Professor Miller enjoys raising her four sons (ages 15, 9, 5, and 2), watching SEC football (especially the Crimson Tide), and writing. In addition to a short story/memoir she has been writing, and her regularly featured articles in The Alabama Lawyer, she is currently working on two other academic articles for publication in law reviews, including:
