ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition
Please congratulate the moot court team of Lauren Ellison, Brad Howell, and Matthew Penfield, who advanced from the regional ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition and will be going to Nationals in Chicago April 2-4. This marks the second year in a row that Cumberland has sent a moot court team to Nationals at this competition.
Two Cumberland teams competed in the Miami regional the first weekend of Spring Break. One team was composed of John Coke, Roderick Evans, and Clifford Nelson, and the other was Lauren Ellison, Brad Howell, and Matthew Penfield.
Both teams wrote good briefs, which gave them an advantage in the first two rounds, seeded to protect the teams with better brief scores. After the preliminary rounds and going into the elimination round Saturday morning, Penfield, Howell, and Ellison were seeded in about the top 25% of teams, and Coke, Evans, and Nelson were at about the 50% range. Coke, Evans, and Nelson were narrowly edged out by a team from Barry University. Ellison, Howell, and Penfield beat teams from the University of Texas, University of Houston, University of Georgia, and Brigham Young University to advance.
Matthew Penfield was given an award as the third best oral advocate in the region, and Brad Howell received the award for the fifth best. Both had average scores that were nearly perfect.
Thanks to the many people who helped these teams prepare.
