ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition

Two Cumberland teams competed in the regional of the American Bar Association National Appellate Advocacy Competition in Atlanta, Georgia on February 23-26. The first team consisted of Kathleen Bowers, Kerra Hicks and Brittany Tedford.  The second team consisted of Katie Garrety, Katie Kimbrell and Ryan Richardson.  The teams were coached by Charlie Shah ’96 of Christian & Small LLP and Anne Lamkin Durward '95 of Massey, Stotser & Nichols, PC, respectively.

Out of the 32 teams that competed, Garrety, Kimbrell and Richardson were undefeated and the number one seed heading into the final round.  After arguing five rounds, they lost by a close margin in the final argument of the competition.  This team won the award for the best brief.

Katie Garrety was named third best oral advocate in the competition.
