American Inn of Court has been Chartered at Samford University’s Cumberland School of LawBIRMINGHAM, Ala. Jan. 15, 2013 - John L. Carroll, dean and Ethel P. Malugen Professor of Law, is proud to announce that an American Inn of Court has been chartered at Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law. The American Inns of Court movement has long led the way in promoting professionalism, civility and ethics at the American Bench and Bar. The Inn at Cumberland has been named the Judge James Edwin Horton Inn of Court in honor of Judge James Edwin Horton, an 1899 graduate of Cumberland School of Law. In one of the infamous “Scottsboro Boys” cases, Judge Edwin James Horton set aside the guilty verdict and death sentence, one of the most courageous judicial acts in American history. Membership in the Inn is limited to Cumberland graduates and students. Every year, 20 Cumberland students will be selected--10 second-year and 10 third-year students--to become pupils in the Inn to be mentored and trained by the other members of the Inn. Membership in the James Edwin Horton Inn of Court will be considered a high honor. As Judge Carroll recently noted, "the creation of Judge James Edwin Horton Inn of Court further enhances our already nationally recognized advocacy program. It also provides an opportunity for our students to be taught and mentored by some of the finest lawyers and judges in the country in a setting modeled after the English Inns of Court." The following people are Cumberland School of Law's inaugural Masters of the Bench of the Inn. Master Benchers must have superior character, ability and excellence in litigation and in the legal profession; and have at least 15 years of experience.
