Cumberland School of Law Celebrates Alabama Appleseed’s National Welcoming Week
Cassandra W. Adams, MPH, J.D. is the director of Cumberland's Community Mediation Center & Public Interest Project. Cumberland’s Public Interest Project works on a number of community improvement projects throughout the local community. These projects would not be possible without the support of the many law students who volunteer their time. Projects such as these About Alabama Appleseed's Welcoming Alabama Campaign The mission of Alabama Appleseed is to work for systemic policy reforms that achieve justice and fairness for low-income and other vulnerable populations that typically have little, or no, voice in developing or changing policies that impact their lives. On Thursday, September 20, 2012, from 5 to 8 p.m., Cumberland School of Law’s Community Mediation Center & Public Interest Project celebrated National Welcoming Week by participating in a pantry stock to benefit the YWCA and the Church of the Reconciler. The law school partnered with the Birmingham Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program to collect items at Birmingham’s Glen Iris Elementary School. On hand at the school collecting items was Cumberland School of Law’s Student Bar Association, Black Law Students Association, and the Community Service & Public Interest Organization.
provide law students, who have an interest in furthering their careers in public service and pro bono work, an opportunity to engage their local communities. These projects not only have a community service aspect but also an element that shows law students the value of their legal training and education.
