"Loosening the Death Belt" Seminar
The Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association is holding its annual “Loosening the Death Belt” seminar in Birmingham on January 27-28, 2012 at the Embassy Suites Hoover. The seminar brings quality training to criminal defense lawyers who handle capital cases.
This year’s keynote speaker is Bud Welch, and he will give a presentation to students and faculty on Thursday, January 26 in the Moot Court Room at 3:00 PM.
Mr. Welch is an anti-death penalty advocate whose daughter was killed in the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. In the months after her death, Mr. Welch changed from supporting the death penalty for Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols to taking a public stand against it. He made close friends with the McVeigh family in his struggle to accept the death of his daughter. His story is a very powerful one and carries a theme of forgiveness.
