The Herbert W. Peterson Competition

On the weekend of August 25th there were 52 Alabama attorneys and judges that converged on Cumberland School of Law’s campus for the first rounds of the 2012 Herbert W. Peterson National Trial Team Competition. “The Peterson,” as it is referred to in the halls of the law school, serves as the vehicle for selecting Cumberland School of Law’s national trial teams.

Dean & Law Professor Traveled to Brazil for an Alternative Dispute Resolution Conference

From August 23 to 25, John L. Carroll, dean at Cumberland School of Law, and Michael D. Floyd, law professor and director of international studies at Cumberland School of Law, traveled to São Paulo, Brazil, to participate in the alternative dispute resolution conference titled “Mudança de Cultura pela Composição de Litígios (translated into English, Cultural Change for the Settlement of Disputes).”  The conference was hosted by Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), a highly respected Brazilian university with campuses in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Brasilia.  FGV has an enormous online presence in Brazil:

Dean Carroll Delays Cumberland Retirement to Enable a More Complete Dean Search

Judge John L. Carroll, dean of Samford University's Cumberland School of Law, has delayed his announced retirement a full year to enable the university to conduct a more complete search for his successor.  Judge Carroll will now retire as dean June 30, 2014, instead of June 30, 2013, as he announced in June of this year.

The delay comes at the request of Samford President Andrew Westmoreland and Provost and Executive Vice President Brad Creed, who cited the need for additional time to complete the search for a new law dean.

ADLA Arrives on Campus for Their Trial Academy

Cumberland School of Law welcomes the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association (ADLA) to its campus for their Trial Academy.

According to its website “the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association has a membership of over 1,100 attorneys dedicated to the defense of civil actions and the promotion of fairness and integrity in the civil justice system.”

Alumna Named National Vice President of Largest Women’s Fraternal Organization in the World

Anna Funderburk Buckner has been elected as Chi Omega Fraternity’s National Vice President for the 2012-2014 biennium. She brings many years of national and local volunteer involvement.

Anna is an initiate of the Alpha Beta Chapter of Chi Omega at Auburn University, where she graduated with a B.S. and later earned her Master of Business Administration. She also holds a J.D. from Cumberland School of Law. 

Welcome to Cumberland the Southern Public Defender Training Center

Cumberland School of Law will host on campus, from July 28 through August 11, 2012, the Summer 2012 Institute for the Southern Public Defender Training Center (SPDTC). The SPDTC is headquartered in Atlanta, GA. This is the sixth consecutive year for the Center to hold its annual training program at the law school.

Professor Wendy Greene has been invited to attend White House Forum

Wendy Greene, associate professor and director of faculty development at Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law, has been invited to attend a special event at the White House on Monday, July 23, 2012.  The event is the African American Women's Forum.  At the event, White House officials will be briefing as well as dialoguing attendees on policy issues affecting African American women.
