Basic Skills in Advocacy

Course Number:
800S
Professor:
John L. Carroll

I am excited that you have signed up for the Basic Skills class. The class will teach you skills that you will help you throughout your legal career regardless of what you decide to do.

I have attached the syllabus for the class which contains the materials you must purchase for the course as well as the assignment for the first class. As you will see, one of the topics for discussion in that first class is fact gathering. As counsel for your client, you are ethically charged with the duty of gathering the facts relating to your client’s case. I have attached two fact situations – one civil and one criminal- which will form the basis for our discussion. I expect you to read those fact situations and be prepared to discuss with me how you would gather the facts if you were representing the client.

I look forward to seeing you next Thursday.
